When polled, most Americans agree that a group should have a leader but are somewhat unsure about what functions a leader should perform. There are a number of different types of leadership roles.
Procedural leader - guides the processes of the group. The functions are to:
set the agenda
suggest procedures to follow
arrange group meeting times and places
keep group members on track
follow up on assignments
set time tables and due dates
Discussion leader - guides the discussion of a group. Functions are to:
keep the discussion on track
encourage all members to be heard
discourage individual members from dominating the group
refrain from interjecting his/her own comments or from
Spokesperson/liason - represents the group to others outside the group. Functions are to:
speak on behalf of the group
correctly relay group decisions
