Objectives:

This course provides an examination of the encoding, decoding processes, and interaction patterns associated with all forms of human nonverbal communicative behavior. At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to recognize forms of nonverbal communication, understand the possible communicative implications of nonverbal behavior, and predict the outcomes of and possibly manage nonverbal interactions. To the extent that the readings in this course center around current and classic social scientific studies of specific nonverbal behaviors, students will learn to analyze and evaluate nonverbal communication research studies and theory papers.

Grading:

Course grades will be determined by the results of three multiple choice exams covering both readings and lecture materials, and a demonstrated willingness to participate and contribute to class discussion activities.
